This semicircular-shaped theatre was one of the major amusement spots in the second century AD. It had been in good condition for thousands of years, but is now in ruins. This magnificent structure could house more than 12,000 people. Calcareous stones and bricks were used as major building materials. The acoustics of the theatre are marvellous, and the audibility of events was dramatic. The theatre was 96 m wide, and the stage was one-quarter the width of it. The Roman ruler Marcus Aurelius declared that a man who built a great structure could marry his daughter after winning the competition. Janan, one of the competing architects, built it, and he won for its awe-inspiring acoustic feature. The marriage ceremony was then conducted in the theatre.
